In June 1964, Bhaktivedanta Swami got the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Srila Prabhupada gave the Prime Minister a copy of the his first volume of Srimad Bhagavatam. A photographer took a picture. The Prime Minister smiled at the book. The next day, Bhaktivedanta Swami wrote to the Prime Minister and he soon received a favorable reply, personally signed by the Prime Minister.
